Weight Loss Helps with Type 2 Diabetes
For overweight diabetics, losing weight can significantly improve blood sugar levels. To classify overweight, the so-called Body Mass Index (BMI) is determined. It is calculated from the ratio of weight to height.
Body Mass Index (BMI) Classification for Men
Category | BMI (kg/m²) | Description |
Underweight | < 20 | Body weight is below the normal range. |
Normal weight | 20 – 25 | Healthy weight range. |
Overweight | 25 – 30 | Increased body weight; risk for metabolic disorders may rise. |
Obesity Grade 1 | 30 – 35 | Mild obesity; health risks begin to increase. |
Obesity Grade 2 | 35 – 40 | Moderate obesity; significant health risks. |
Obesity Grade 3 | > 40 | Severe obesity; very high health risk. |
Body Mass Index (BMI) Classification for Women
Category | BMI (kg/m²) | Description |
Underweight | < 19 | Body weight is below the normal range. |
Normal weight | 19-23,9 | Healthy and desirable weight range. |
Overweight | 24 – 29,9 | Increased body weight; risk for metabolic and cardiovascular diseases may rise. |
Obesity Grade 1 | 30 – 35 | Mild obesity; noticeable health risk. |
Obesity Grade 2 | 35 – 40 | Moderate obesity; significant health impairment possible. |
Obesity Grade 3 | > 40 | Severe obesity; very high health risk. |
You can determine your personal BMI yourself by entering your weight and height into the formula. The calculation is for men and women the same. The classification for underweight and normal weight is different:
BMI = weight / height²
