Comorbidities

Comorbidities associated with diabetes excluding the direct complications caused by the disease itself (like nerve or kidney damage).

Cardiovascular Comorbidities

These conditions often occur alongside diabetes as part of Metabolic Syndrome.

  • Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): The most common comorbidity.
  • Dyslipidemia / Hyperlipidemia: Disorders of lipid metabolism (elevated cholesterol or triglycerides).
  • Obesity: Excessive body fat that often precedes or accompanies Type 2 diabetes.

Respiratory & Sleep Disorders

  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA): A condition where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep.
  • Asthma: Often categorized as a “discordant comorbidity” (not directly related to the diabetic disease process).

Mental Health & Cognitive Conditions

  • Depression: A mood disorder that often interacts with and complicates diabetes management.
  • Anxiety Disorders: Persistent and excessive worry or fear.
  • Cognitive Impairment / Dementia: Including Alzheimer’s disease, which shares metabolic links with diabetes.

Other Chronic Comorbidities

  • Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD): A buildup of extra fat in liver cells not caused by alcohol.
  • Thyroid Disorders: Especially autoimmune thyroid diseases (common in Type 1 diabetes).
  • Arthritis / Joint Pain: Chronic joint inflammation and associated pain.
  • PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome): A hormonal disorder closely linked to insulin resistance.
  • Cancer: Statistical evidence shows an increased risk for certain types of cancer in diabetic patients.

Note: Terms like Retinopathy (eye damage), Nephropathy (kidney damage), and Neuropathy (nerve damage) are excluded from this list because they are classified as complications (damage caused by diabetes) rather than independent comorbidities.
